Commissioners accept bids

Cordele — In a record short meeting, Wilcox Commissioners agreed during their Tuesday meeting to accept bids from contractors for paving Barrentine Rd.

At the August meeting, they had decided to fix some erosion problems on the road with rip rap installed on the outlet ends of 54” pipes.

Chairperson Clarice Morrison said Tuesday that the roadway has been graded and is now ready for a contract to be let for triple surface treatment. That contract must be completed by October of 2011.

The board also will advertise a proposed road closing at the request of a family that owns land on the road. Commissioners will conduct a public hearing for closing a portion of Wallflower Rd. near the Ben Hill County line on Sept. 23.

Commissioner Lee Hollingsworth informed other board members that water is running down a wall in the courthouse basement, and he suspects a drain may not be working properly. There also seems to be a leak in the ceiling.

State Representative Jimmy Pruitt was scheduled to come to Abbeville Wednesday to talk with board members about possible stimulus money to complete some work on the courthouse. Commissioner David Brown reminded other commissioners of that meeting.

At a called meeting in August, commissioners refused to sell the old health department building for $23,000. They made a counter offer of $34,000 which local realtor Scotty King was to carry to the prospective buyer.

Clerk Hazel Keene said she doesn’t know yet whether the buyer accepted the counter offer.
