Cordele —
CORDELE — Former commissioner, Willie Colson, Jr. was honored for 50 years of service to the city at the City Commission meeting Tuesday night.
Chairman Zack Wade presented Colson with a plaque to show the board’s appreciation.
In other commission activity:
— Larry Holloman, citizen of Cordele, discussed his discontent with what he called “unprofessional conduct and disrespect” shown to him by officers representing the Cordele Police Department.
Holloman said the incident in question occurred in September of 2009, and he filed a complaint in October of 2009. He has yet, to this day, received any kind of acknowledgement regarding his complaint. He asked the Commissions to look into the matter and consider establishing a Police/Citizen Review Board.
— The board agreed to donate $25 to the Cordele 4-H Club.
— A motion was approved for employees insurance coverage. Through Partners Benefit Group Representative Noel Williams, Lincoln Life Insurance Company has offered coverage to city employees on a voluntary basis. There wouldl be no cost to the city for life and short/long term disability insurance coverage with the premiums to be payroll deductible.
— River Valley Regional Council submitted a request to amend the 2007-2012 Five Year Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy. It would stipulate that future projects must be viable, help maintain the community’s economic health, be consistent with state and federal guidelines, be eligible to be funded under the governmental criteria, and be supported by the local government. The board approved the request.
— The commission was advised that the EDA will raise its match for water/sewer and gas projects to Cedar Creek Park, Norbord Water and Peak Shaving Plant from 36.22% to 45.57%. City Manager Jean Burnette said “we anticipate receiving an increased reimbursement to this effect shortly for the work already completed.”
— In the community development report, there were several 2nd readings of an ordinance under the Unsafe Building and Premises Ordinance. Property at 107 North 11th St., 413 West 5th Ave., 905 South 10th St., and 907 South 10th Lydia St. can now be cleaned up by the city with the charges going to the property owner.

City police officers reported making four assorted arrests on what otherwise was a quite Thursday.

Police responded to 1,191 calls for service in January
A spokesman for the Cordele Police Department’s criminal interdiction and traffic enforcement unit has released a January activity report that shows officers answered 1,191 calls for service and arrested 32 wanted persons.

Local resident faces drug, traffic charges
A driver’s license and sobriety checkpoint conducted Tuesday by Cordele Police Department officers resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old local resident on dual charges.

DCUTS ceasing operation
Council members here met in a called meeting Tuesday to grant permission for the DCUTS director to ask Dooly County to take over operation of the transit system.

G-P Chemical plant closing
Employees of the Georgia-Pacific Chemical plant here were informed Wednesday that their facility will be closing, and 24 employees will be terminated.
