Cordele —
A 33-year-old Cordele man who suffered third degree burns over 50 percent of his body in a Nov. 20 fire at his 1605 Rainbow Dr. home has succumbed to his injuries.
Crisp County Coroner Jimmy Rainey confirmed Monday that officials of the Medical College of Georgia’s Burns Center in Augusta called shortly after midnight Saturday to inform him Tyrone Newsome had died.
Initially taken to Crisp Regional Hospital before being airlifted to Augusta, Newsome reportedly had been severely burned on the upper part of his body and face.
Cordele Fire Department Chief Augusta Telfair said he was told by the victim’s female companion that she, Newsome and children ages 1, 5 and 7 had safely gotten out of the home when the fire was detected just before 4:30 a.m.
The woman told firemen Newsome went back inside to apparently fight the blaze that had started in a bedroom closet where there was no power. Most of the damage was restricted to that area although other portions of the home did sustain heat and smoke damage.
Telfair said his men told him they heard a smoke detector sounding when they arrived at the mobile home where total damage was estimated at less than $5,000.
Not long after the blaze had been extinguished, Telfair said he was asking the State Fire Marshal’s office to investigate. Results of that probe have not yet been released.
