Over $50k seized in Dooly traffic stop

Cordele Dispatch

DOOLY — Sheriff’s deputies here confiscated more than $56,000 in a traffic stop here last week.

According to a press release, Dooly deputies initiated a traffic stop on a 2006 Ford Explorer for three traffic violations. The Explorer, occupied by two males from Mexico was traveling northbound on I-75 at the time of the stop.

During the stop, the release indicated that deputies learned the owner of the vehicle was not present. Besides that, the two men gave conflicting stories and appeared nervous.

This prompted deputies to ask for consent to search the vehicle which was given. Upon examination of a cooler in the vehicle, deputies noticed that the plastic insert for the cooler was not glued in as it would have been from the factory.

They lifted the insert and noticed that the insulated liner had been cut. Inside they found12 bundles of U.S. currency totaling $56,700.

Neither occupant of the vehicle claimed any knowledge of the money and informed deputies that someone gave them the vehicle and told them to go to Florida and pick up the cooler and a suitcase.

According to the report, the investigation has been turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Both subjects had holds placed on them by I.C.E. (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) for deportation.
