Americus —
Dr. John Watford who has been serving as vice president of operations for the Crisp County Center has been named vice president for academic affairs at South Georgia Technical College effective immediately,
SGTC President Sparky Reeves recently made the announcement. Dr. Watford has been serving in the position on an interim basis since June 2011.
“Dr. Watford has been an integral part of South Georgia Technical College for the past 22 years,” says Reeves. “He began his career here as an instructor and over the past two decades has done an excellent job in each of his capacities. I have full confidence in Dr. Watford and I look forward to working with him in this new role.”
Watford will continue to oversee the operations for the Academic Affairs department and instructional services on the Crisp County Center. His responsibilities will now be expanded to the entire college.
“Academic affairs has been at the heart of my career here at South Georgia Technical College,” said Watford. “I am extremely honored that President Reeves has expressed his confidence in my abilities, and I am excited to be able to continue to work with the professionals at South Georgia Technical College in this expanded role.”
He also expressed his gratitude to the faculty, staff, and community representatives that he has worked with during his tenure as the vice president of operations for the Crisp County Center.
“In my new role, I will still have ties to the Crisp County community and I plan to stay involved in many of the community activities that will have an academic impact on students,” he said.
In his new position, Watford hopes to implement new programs that will benefit students as well as provide a trained workforce for area business and industry. “We have identified a number of new program areas that we hope to implement as early as fall 2012,” he says.
In addition to his administrative and instructional duties in the academic affairs department which included working as a computer Information systems instructor as well as the director of instruction, Watford also served as the Information technology director for the college from 1996 to 1997 where he was responsible for overseeing the administrative student records system and accounts receivable system as well as purchasing, network support, maintenance, and installation of all computer hardware and software for the college.
Prior to joining South Georgia Technical College’s faculty and staff, he worked with Cooper Lighting in Americus as an applications engineer.
“This is an exciting time for South Georgia Technical College,” said Reeves. “We are moving full speed ahead.
“There are a number of new ventures on the horizon and South Georgia Technical College is diligently working to prepare individuals for the opportunities that are available.
“Our faculty and staff have been working with Dr. Watford on his new ideas and I believe that this will be a smooth transition for students, faculty, and staff,” Reeves added.
Watford is married to the former Barbara Jernigan who is the principal of Sara Cobb Elementary School in Americus. The couple has three children, Mark, 21, who attends Georgia Southwestern State University; Joshua, 19, a student at Valdosta State University; and Lacey, 16, who is a student at Americus-Sumter County High School.
