Cordele —
ATLANTA — Crisp County’s John Woodard has been inducted into GACDS (Georgia Association of Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors) Hall of Fame.
This induction recognizes Woodard’s contributions to conservation efforts in the Middle South Georgia District.
Woodard currently serves as an elected district supervisor on the Middle South Georgia Soil and Water Conservation District Board that includes Ben Hill, Brooks, Colquitt, Crisp, Irwin, Thomas, Tift, Turner and Worth counties. He has held this position for more than 25 years and served as chairman of the district board for four of those years.
In addition to this responsibility, Woodard has served on the Legislative Board of Crisp County Farm Bureau since 2000 and on the Farm Bureau Pecan Commission since 2007. He also serves as chairman of the J.W. Mann Show Barn Steering Committee and the Livestock Association for FFA and 4-H.
In the 1950’s, Woodard convinced the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce to sponsor the Georgia Watermelon Festival, which has become the oldest continuously running festival in Georgia.
In 1978, Woodard participated in the American agriculture strike by driving his tractor over 760 miles to Washington, D.C. Protests over agricultural prices resulted in the founding of the American Agriculture Movement.
Past awards include Middle South Georgia Soil and Water Conservation District Conservationist of the Year in 2011, Woodmen of the World Conservation Award in 1989 and the Middle South Georgia Man of the Year Award in 1974.
Soil and Water Conservation Districts were created in 1937 by the Georgia General Assembly to protect the state's soil and water resources following the Dust Bowl of the 1930's.
Districts provide a way for citizens to set local resource priorities for state and federal assistance programs.
