Cordele —
One of two men who allegedly broke into the rear of four tractor-trailer rigs while the drivers were either asleep in the cab or were inside Pilot Travel Center has been arrested.
A news release submitted to news media members by the Cordele Police Department identified the subject in custody as Maurice Simmons, 35, of 411 Oak Ave. W.
Officers were called to the incident location just before midnight last Friday to investigate the break-ins and gave chase to the second suspect still being sought.
During that pursuit, police found Simmons hiding in a nearby wooded area and took him into custody. They also recovered an undisclosed quantity of diapers that had been stolen from one of the rigs.
Simmons has been charged with four counts of burglary and one count each of theft by taking and obstruction of officers in the performance of their duties.
In other activity between Thursday and Monday, police:
— Cited David Butts, 42, of 104 13th St. S., for theft of mislaid property when he allegedly removed a purse from a store counter where it had been inadvertently left by its owner.
An additional charge of possession of marijuana was made against Butts when suspected “pot” was found on him during a routine patdown.
— Charged a couple with battery (domestic violence) after each caused visible injuries to the other during a Sunday altercation.
Morgan Griffin, 24, of 607 20th Ave. E., and his girlfriend, Taylor Smith, 19, of 710 S. Hickory St., were both ticketed when officers were unable to determine which of them actually started the fight.
— Made two shoplifting arrests.
Susan Roobin, 50, of 707 31st Ave. E., was booked for a fourth offense after she allegedly stole shoes Sunday from The Shoe Department. Jaquese Hicks, 19, of 104 Cato Rd., was taken into custody on Monday after reportedly removing items from Walmart without making payment.
— Took two persons into custody on probation violation arrests.
Booked for that offense on Monday was Cecilia Shaw, 55, of an undisclosed Florida city . Cited for the same offense on Friday was Johnny Blackwell Jr., 33, of 507 Ninth Ave. E.
— Booked Jordan Jacobs, 21, of 510 13th Ave. E., for criminal trespass after he reportedly broke several items while attending a Saturday family gathering during which he was intoxicated.
