Cordele —
In nominating Noel Wade for the “exceedingly excellent” teacher award presented annually by the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce, one of his students said he had really helped him. “You’re the man!” he said.
Bridget Milani presented the award after explaining that any teacher in Crisp County from pre-kindergarten through college can be nominated by a student, former student, parent, colleague or friend. “We received quite a few nominations,” she added.
Other awards went to the ambassador of the year and the volunteer of the year. Amber Herrington who served as chairperson of the ambassadors for the past year and has been active in the corps for four years was chosen as ambassador of the year.
She was described as a person “who makes a difference in the community, one who works with energy and a positive attitude.”
James Gilliam who has helped with the annual fish fry in Atlanta and countless other Chamber projects for many years received the volunteer of the year award. Chamber Chairman Eli Tinsley said, “he can cook anything.”
Also recognized during the evening were Chamber members Buddy Leger who was inducted into the Georgia Agriculture Hall of Fame during 2012 and Bruce Drennan who has been named one of Georgia Trend’s “100 most influential Georgians” in 2013.
Chamber Administrative Assistant Gail Reynolds received special thanks from Herrington for her “countless hours to help the community and her selfless sacrifice.” She usually works behind the scenes to make things happen, Herrington said.
Tinsley passed the gavel to the 2013 chairman, Richard Grogg, and Grogg presented Tinsley with a plaque of appreciation for his service to the Chamber.
Grogg shared the Chamber’s mission statement for this year with the crowd, “to advance the economic, industrial, professional, cultural and civic welfare of Cordele and Crisp County.”
Continuing, he added, “we need to create the best environment possible for keeping and growing jobs and businesses in our community. That’s what the Chamber of Commerce is all about and I hope I can count on you to help us reach that goal.”
In conclusion, he quoted Vince Lombardi, a former Green Bay Packers coach who led that team to five NFL championships, “the difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack in will.”
