Vienna —
Dooly County Board of Education members began their first meeting of 2013 with a few organizational items before getting down to business.
Eddie Almond was chosen to continue serving as chairman of the board and Melvilla West will retain the vice chairmanship for the next year. The board also voted to keep its current list of depositories for school funds.
There were some questions regarding the approval of the legal media organ for the BOE. A motion was made to approve the News Observer as the legal organ with the Cordele Dispatch being named as a secondary organ. Board member Verlin Jones questioned the naming of two legal organs, and BOE attorney Maurice King said there could be only one official organ but that items could be placed in both newspapers.
There are times, board members agreed when they need something printed before the News Observer has another publication. Board members were ppointed to serve on various committees.
Welcomed to his first BOE meeting was Kenneth Kellogg who was elected to serve in the seat vacated by Wayne Wilkin who retired at the end of his term.
In other business, Dr. Grady Miles, superintendent read a list of football players who have been recognized on the region and state levels. Valecia Sales from the Dooly County Community Enrichment Coalition gave an update on the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant.
Arney Bryant, principal of Dooly County High School, gave a state of the school update and showed a video of a typical day at the school. Bryant explained some of the technology being used. He also touched on the improvements in the school’s SAT scores, informing board members that he had received a letter from State Superintendent Dr. John Barge concerning the score improvements.
Also on the agenda:
• Sylvester Granville questioned board members about accusations that he would be arrested at a meeting stating he had been warned to watch what he says. He added that he could not be arrested for speaking his mind. He began to bring up an issue he has regarding one of the schools at which time he was cut off by Chairman Almond who informed him that personnel matters were limited to executive session and could not be discussed in open meeting. He also reminded Granville that when speaking, names of persons involved should not be mentioned.
Almond then asked Granville if he had read a copy of the rules for speaking during public participation and informed him that meetings were not for attacking. If something happens at a school, Almond said, his concerns should be taken to the school, not the board.
• Tameika Chaney, the parent of a student at Dooly County Middle School said she had spoken with the principal there, but had not received satisfaction. She was told that she needsc to take her concerns through the school.
