Pinehurst —
While two wrecks in Dooly County this week caused no serious injuries, they did create havoc for the community.
Southbound traffic on I-75 was virtually stopped or diverted onto Hwy. 41 for more than four hours early Friday morning when a tractor trailer flipped at the 117 exit near here.
Middle Georgia Electric Membership Corporation members were without power several hours Wednesday afternoon when a log truck wrecked on Hwy. 41 about four miles north of Vienna and struck a power pole.
The Friday mishap on I-75 occurred about 5:30 a.m. when the driver of a Freightliner tractor trailer lost control of his rig in the construction zone near the southbound entrance to Exit 117.
It was unclear how the second vehicle, an International tractor trailer was involved because the State Patrol report was incomplete Friday afternoon.
A spokesperson for Cordele Post 30 of the GSP said Charles Dixon, 48, of Warner Robins was the driver of the Freightliner, and he was charged with failure to maintain lane. The driver of the International was identified as William Cook, 42, of Bogalusa, LA.
Neither driver suffered any injuries, but traffic was tied up until after 10 a.m. as law enforcement officers worked the scene and wrecker services removed the vehicles from the roadway.
Southbound traffic left the interstate in Unadilla and Pinehurst and traveled toward Vienna on Hwy. 41 where it was bumper to bumper and moving at 10 mph in some places. Officers were directing traffic in Pinehurst and Vienna for several hours.
The Wednesday incident occurred when the driver of a loaded log truck, Victor Henderson, 41, of Jackson reportedly attempted to avoid hitting another truck driven by Ashley Singletary, 23, of Cordele about 2 p.m.
Henderson complained of neck injuries and was transported to Crisp Regional Hospital for treatment. He was charged with having no tag and failure to use a seatbelt. Singletary was charged with failure to yield after stopping at a stop sign.
According to the Post 30 spokesperson, Singletary was traveling west on Roberson Rd. At the intersection of Hwy. 41, both drivers said Singletary stopped, but for some reason, he did not see the log truck approaching, so he then pulled onto Hwy. 41 to make a left turn.
In an attempt to avoid a collision, Henderson told officers he steered toward the westside of the road. At that point, Singletary said he saw the truck, and he steered to the east side to give the log truck more room.
There was no contact between the vehicles, according to the GSP report, but the log truck traveled off the road into a private drive, struck a mailbox and went in the ditch.
As he attempted to steer back toward the road, his load shifted, he overturned and struck a power pole. Logs scattered in the ditch and yard as the power pole and wires fell across both vehicles involved in the incident.
Middle Georgia EMC personnel were then summoned to make necessary repairs, and power in the area was restored between 5 and 5:30 p.m.
