Board hears department reports

By BECKY CRISSMAN

VIENNA — Members of city council here listened to reports from various departments within the city at their Monday meeting.

Vienna Police Chief Jamey Reed updated council on the activities of the police department. Janet Joiner of Community Development informed the board of a new business in the area, a peanut, pecan and ice-cream shop located in the old BP station next to the Pilot on the East side of exit 109.

She indicated that the city has made strides in its quest to eliminate dilapidated housing. At the end of 2009, she said, the number has dropped to 2% which is far better than it was just years ago.

Councilman Walter Brown asked Joiner about the progress of the water park that is to be built in the area. She informed council that no land has been purchased yet and she has no new information about the status of the project.

Stephanie Langley with Keep Vienna Beautiful/Vienna Better Hometown spoke about the upcoming census awareness week. She stressed the importance of participation in the census and what it means for the city.
