CORDELE — After all the oinks faded and the dust settled on the J.W. Mann Show Barn Wednesday, Hanna Dunnavant’s hog was named the 2010 Market Hog Show grand champion.
Dunnavant, a 4-H student and her pig also finished first in the Class four category. She received a purple ribbon and belt buckle.
FFA member Kyndal Gordon showed the reserve champion hog. Thomas Perry had the grand champion steer in that portion of the competition.
Both the market hog and steer contests are open to 4-H and FFA students, most of whom have been grooming and working with their show animals for several months.
The hog show competition is divided into four categories, depending on the weight of the pig. Class one hogs weigh 220-230 lbs.; class two, 235-245 lbs.; class three, 250-260 lbs., and class four, 265-270 lbs.
In addition to grand and reserve champions, awards were handed out to the competitors who did the best job in showmanship. Judge Jack Wall explained to the crowd that he looks for entrants who move the best with their hog, keeping eye contact with the judge and not moving the animal too quickly.
Showmanship was divided into three categories.
In fifth and sixth grade, 1st place went to Jacob Hughes; 2nd to Hannah Carroll, and 3rd to Kaylee Perry.
