During its recent meeting, members of the Vienna Woman’s Club selected two groups and two women to support through the KIVA project.
Funding for this project is similar to a revolving loan fund and once repaid will be reinvested. Projects selected by the local organization were located in Peru, Phillipines, Guatemala and Mexico.
First Vice President Kay Chadwick conducted the business meeting, and Casey McClain provided an inspirational thought entitled “Make Joy Your Choice.”
A GaFWC mousepad was presented to Sharon Wilkin as a membership gift. Plans for the August Institute in Athens were announced. Watches were collected for the GFWC art project.
A University of Georgia Library publication was shared with articles of particular interest noted concerning the correspondence between Margaret Mitchell and Hattie McDaniel (the actress who played Mammy in Gone with Wind). Also featured was Macon author Rick Hutto.
An initial meeting is scheduled with the Dooly Chamber of Commerce to plan for the 2012 Art Show. In the area of conservation, the Arbor Day publication was reviewed. Cards were sent to participants at the Senior Center. Chadwick reported that 16 donors participated in the recent Red Cross Blood Drive.
In the area of International Issues, the Samaritan’s Purse newsletter was shared and members were reminded to begin collecting items for the Christmas Shoe Box project. The club is also supporting Allison Bowen’s Costa Rican mission trip by providing hygiene items.
A copy of the Tallulah Falls Annual was provided for review. Flag Day was announced for June 14, and members were urged to fly American flags.
Members will be enjoying a July trip to Horsecreek Winery in Nashville in lieu of a regular meeting. Additional plans were made for the fall Caring Casseroles project. The club donated $20 to the restoration of GFWC founder, Ginny June Crowley’s grave site.
Hostesses for the meeting were Kathryn Braxton and Jessica Owens. A delicious light supper of fruit, chicken salad and brownies was served.
Membership in the VWC is open to women living and/or working in Dooly County. Applicants must be registered voters.
