Vienna —
Council members here are moving forward with the sidewalk project on West Union Street. At their most recent meeting, they approved a bid from Greene Concrete which now will be submitted to the GDOT.
The lowest of two bids, Greene’s proposal came in at $294,508.50 with most of that coming from grant funds.
Downtown Development Director Janet Joiner said GDOT either will accept the city’s recommendation or make one of its own.
City attorney Verlin Jones asked Joiner if the bids submitted included the removal of debris. She said she would look into that and make sure it was in the contract agreement. The GDOT will develop that contract.
In her regular report, Joiner also informed council members that $15,000 has been raised for a Habitat for Humanity house to be built in the city. The family selection process will begin in January, and she advised council to keep in mind that applicants need to be able to make the payments and handle guidelines.
All council members took a moment to congratulate the Dooly County Bobcats on making it to the state championship at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Councilman Randall Almond said he had spoken with a player on the team who said they had made it this far and they didn’t want just a ham, they wanted the whole hog.
Also on the agenda Mayor Eddie Daniels commented on how busy the police department has been lately and commended them for all their hard work. The department currently has one person in training at the academy who will graduate Dec. 21.
Jones commended city workers. “Too often all employees receive is criticism,” Jones said. “As we look to the Christmas season let us forgive the things that don’t necessarily go right and look to those things that do.”
