CORDELE — City police officers were asked during the weekend to investigate the theft of almost $2,000 worth of items that had been removed sometime within the past several months from a unit at Cordele Mini Storage on 24th Ave. E.

The property owner told Sgt. Charles Dennard a Maytag brand washer, dryer, freezer, refrigerator and stove all valued at $300 each were taken along with a 1970-71 Crisp County High class ring, a collection of clown dolls, kitchen ware, family photos and a wheelchair.

Col. Lewis Green said he received an anonymous call from a subject who directed him to the Hampton Inn where Katherine Hosley, 51, of 702 Ninth St. S., had been seen.

The officer said Hosley admitted to her involvement in the wreck, telling him it occurred when she reached down to pick up a cell phone she had dropped onto the floor of her car.

She said she panicked and then drove her Ford LTD away from the scene of the mishap, leaving the car parked behind an abandoned residence in the 300 block of 17th Ave. W. It has been there ever since.

Hosley has been cited for driving while her vehicle registration was canceled, driving while unlicensed, leaving the scene of an accident and operating a vehicle without insurance.

An employee of Watson Food Store on 16th Ave. E. told PFC Clinton Latham the driver of a four-door Dooly truck with a white camper pumped $37.29 worth of fuel into the vehicle shortly after 3:30 p.m. Friday and left without making payment. Police looked for but could not locate the truck.

— Charged Javorius Deontia Taylor, 18, of 201 First St. S., with theft by receiving stolen property.

Lt. Scott Farrow said the citation stemmed from Taylor’s possession of a go-cart that had been recently reported stolen from a Sixth St. N. location sometime within the past six months.

— Cited two persons for shoplifting.

Robert Cross, 47, of 203 15th Ave. W., was cited after he allegedly took four sticks of Old Spice deodorant from Fred’s Dollar Store Friday afternoon.

A store employee said when she confronted Cross about his actions, he got close to her face, told her “You didn’t see nothing” and then upon being advised police would be called responded, “You better not call the police on me.”

After running from the scene, Cross was taken into custody near 10th St. and 14th Ave. by PFC Latham who said he found the stolen goods valued at $7.96 in his possession.

PFC David Haas charged a 16-year-old with taking an MP4 player from Wal-Greens and running from the store shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The youth was taken into custody at his home as the result of an identification made by a customer who was inside the store when the theft occurred.

The search for the suspect led to the arrest of Edward Carter, 29, of 708 15th St. S., on a disorderly conduct charge. Police said Carter jumped from a vehicle stopped in connection with the shoplifting case and ran. He was later found hiding beside a house on 20th Ave. E.

—Looked into a fraud complaint filed by a woman who told Latham that on Friday she unknowingly dropped a $565 money order she had purchased from Wal-Mart.

The complainant told Lt. Louis New he went to a “bootleg house” on 23rd Ave. W. to buy a cigarette and that while he was there a friend of his also purchased marijuana at the location.

He said the two of them began singing “Gangsta” songs, leading the seller of the items to think they where making reference to her. It was at that point the weapon was allegedly pointed at the pair.

When Sgt. Jeremy Taylor saw the vehicle, the operator took off in a different direction. The officer gave pursuit and stopped him a relatively short distance away.

When told to turn off the vehicle’s ignition, the subject instead reportedly shook his head “no” and took off again. Pursuit speeds reached 50-60 mph. The operator managed to elude officers before the four-wheeler was later found hidden behind a house on 17th Avenue E. while covered by a sheet.
