Cordele —
CORDELE — Crisp County Board of Education approved a tentative general fund budget totaling almost $30 million at its June meeting. The final budget will be adopted and the millage rate set at the July 13 regular meeting.
Special revenue funds including $8.7 million from the federal government and capital projects funds will add another $10 million making the total budget almost $40 million.
The general fund budget is down more than $2 million from $32.4 million in 2009.
Since the BOE’s fiscal year begins July 1, members also okayed a spending resolution at the June meeting. This resolution authorizes the superintendent to spend funds in the new fiscal year until the budget is adopted. Spending cannot, however, exceed one-twelfth of the final amended budget.
The Board anticipates that it will need $8.2 million in local taxes. In fact, the amount is the same as last year, so the millage rate should remain the same.
Another $338,500 is expected to come from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for education. State resources are expected to exceed $21 million, and federal funds will total $8.7 million.
Instructional costs will be roughly $21.5 million which is down slightly from last year. Other expenditures also have been cut since state revenues are expected to be reduced.
Also, during the recent meeting, eight work schedule adjustment (furlough) days for the 2010-2011 school year were set as follows: July 26, Oct. 12, Dec. 15 & 16, Jan. 3, March 16, and May 23 & 24.
In other business at the meeting:
— Superintendent Jay Brinson announced that J.S. Pate’s principal, Tere Gibbs, has been invited by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators to particpate in a Principal Leadership Network.
A talented group of 30 principals from across Georgia was selected to attend, Brinson said. The purpose of the meeting is to assist principals in envisioning the challenges and possibilities for their school.
— The board accepted a number of personnel requests for retirements/resignations, termination, family medical leave, transfers, and employment.
— Overnight field trips were also approved. The CCHS JROTC requested permission to attend JROTC Summer Camp in Columbus June 7-11, 2010 with twenty students and three chaperones.
The CCHS Girls’ Basketball team requested permission to attend basketball camp at FSU June 15-17, 2010 with ten students and one chaperone.
The CCHS AP World History and AP U.S. History requested a date change for their already approved field trip to Williamsburg, Virginia. The students would like to change the date of their trip to April 21-25, 2011.
The CCHS Football team requested permission to attend football camp at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, AL July 19-20, 2010.
— A motion was approved for tile flooring to be put in one of the portable classrooms at J.S. Pate. Georgia Design Center submitted the lowest bid for $2,532.27. This project will be funded through SPLOST II.
— Motions were made to approve the following:
• FY11 State Daily Salary Schedule.
• FY11 Certified Local Supplement Schedule.
• Responsibility Supplements.
• Athletic Supplements for 2010-2011.
• FY11 Classified Salary Schedule.
