Cordele —
The community is wrought with sadness after learning that a young soldier, native to the area has lost his life while serving his country.
Stephen Coty Sockalosky, a 21- year old Marine, while serving his country in Afghanistan was fatally injured after stepping on an IED over the weekend.
He initially survived the explosion, and was transported to a hospital in Germany. His wife, mother and grandmother were flown there Tuesday to be with him.
Sometime Wednesday morning, the young soldier succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the incident.
A 2007 graduate of Crisp County High School, Sockalosky had joined the Marines after graduation. It was something friends say he had always talked about doing.
Sockalosky was married to the former Brittany Barton, also a graduate of Crisp County High. His parents are Carolyn Adsit and Stephen Sockalosky, and his granparents are Roy and Pauline Porter of Cordele.
On Sockalosky’s facebook page, friends and loved ones have been posting their condolences and sharing their sentiments.
One post reads, “You will always be in our hearts. You have done so many amazing things in your life, not just for yourself but everyone you came upon and it will never be forgotten.. Love you”
“There is so much I could say about him, but I just can’t right now,” said Sockalosky’s grandfather, Roy Porter Wednesday.
