Vienna —
Dooly County Commissioners have been working to finalize a budget for the 2011 fiscal year.
During their regular meeting Thursday, board members announced that they will not be proposing an increase in the county’s millage rate. Currently that rate is 17.89 mills.
A public hearing will be held on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 9 a.m. regarding the budget and millage rate. Commissioners will then conduct their regular meeting at which time they hope to approve the budget for the new year.
“We only have to hold one public hearing because we are not proposing a millage increase,” said County Administrator Steve Sanders. “Otherwise we would be required to hold three of them.”
Bob Jeter, executive director of the Economic Development Council talked to commissioners about the county’s revolving loan fund which is provided by a USDA grant.
The revolving loan fund makes it possible for businesses, if they meet certain qualifications, to borrow money. As that loan is paid back, it goes into a fund so that it can be loaned to another qualifying business. Currently, Dooly County has two revolving loan funds.
Jeter, who secured the grant for the county in 2004 requested that the commission permit him to consolidate those funds into one account. The board unanimously approved the request, and the Industrial Development Authority will be administering those funds.
Sanders informed the board that the Georgia Department of Transportation has requested a paving and resurfacing priority list. These projects are part of the GDOT’s Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant Program (LMIG). Commissioners wanted to give the matter further consideration. They hope to have a priority list prepared by the next board meeting.
Also on the agenda:
• Commissioners denied a request from the Dooly County High School JROTC for funding from the county’s drug education fund. The request was for $1,194, to purchase supplies for the coming Red Ribbon Week. Sanders informed commissioners that currently there are no funds in that account so the motion had to be denied.
• A six-mile segment of Pennahatchee Creek is on the Federal 303(d) list of impaired waterways. A public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at Marise’s Country Cooking Restaurant in Vienna to discuss the issue. All interested parties are invited to attend.
The next meeting of the Dooly County Board of Commissioners is Thursday, Sept. 16, at 9 a.m. at the commissioner’s office at 113 N. Third Street in Vienna.
