Atlanta —
The Governor has placed his stamp of approval on the new map that divides the county into five districts, based on the 2010 census. Both the Board of Commissioners (BOC) and Board of Education (BOE) whose individual members represent each of those districts had earlier approved the map.
One more hurdle must be jumped before the new map can be utilized in a commission or board of education election, however. Pre-clearance by the U. S. Justice Department is necessary.
The optimal population for each Dooly County district is 2631, but that population figure can deviate up to 5% more or less than the optimal number.
District 1 which includes Unadilla and much of the northeastern part of the county has a population of 2539, with 59% black and 35% white residents. Charles Anderson (BOC) and Melvilla West (BOE) are the current representatives.
District 2 encompasses the center and eastern portion of the county including Pinehurst. Its total population is 2617, 74% of which is white and 23% black.
Terrell Hudson (BOC) and Verlin Jones (BOE) are the current representatives.
District 3 covers most of the southern third of the county, some of which is inside the Vienna city limits. Its population is 2665 and is almost evenly divided as far as race is concerned. Eugene Cason (BOC) and Wayne Wilkin (BOE) are the current representatives.
Most of the city limits of Vienna is included in District 4 which is 64% black and 29% white. Total population is 2665. Current elected officials from that district are Harry Ward (BOC) and Eddie Almond (BOE).
District 5, with a population of 2637, includes much of the northwest and western central part of the county. Byromville, Lilly and Dooling are in this district.
David Barron (BOC) and Janie Winters (BOE) are the current representatives, and the district is nearly evenly divided between black and white residents.
Crisp County also has submitted a new map for approval, but apparently, it has not yet reached the governor’s desk. No discussion of redistricting has come up in Wilcox County yet.
