Abbeville —
In another brief county commission meeting, Wilcox leaders authorized the purchase of a used side arm mower for a capital outlay of $16,000.
The county also will trade in two old mowers that Road Superintendent Adam Dowdy called "beyond worn out" for a total of $14,000. The piece of equipment which was repossessed by a bank has only 370 hours of use, and commissioners agreed that $30,000 was a very good price. Brand new, the mower would cost about $100,000, Dowdy said.
Commissioner Tracy Tyndal asked for an update on Barrentine Rd. which recently was paved, but reportedly now "is falling apart."
The paving project which began about four years ago, County Manager Paula Jones said, involved two different contractors. Neither of them is willing to admit the problems with the road is their fault. Chairman Lanier Keene says $40,000 was withheld when the contractors were paid; however, "that probably won't touch actual costs to repair the damage," he added.
Wilcox Commissioners also believe the Georgia Department of Transportation should accept some of the blame for the problems since it approved the paving project. Keene has asked State Representative Buddy Harden to assist the county, and he has carried all the information to GDOT Board Member Johnny Floyd. "We are waiting to hear further from Mr. Harden," Keene said.
Finally, Jones was appointed as the county's liaison between the state legislature and county governors. She will receive information about legislative action from the Association County Commissioners of Georgia and share it with commissioners.
