CORDELE — Multiple drug charges have been filed against a Cordele man taken into custody after city police received an anonymous tip that drug sales were being conducted at a 10th Street South residence.

Cpl. Bruce Gourley said that as he approached the incident location, he was alerted that a white pickup truck possibly driven by Bernard Adams had just left the scene.

The officer soon located the vehicle in the 600 block of 14th Avenue West where he saw three people standing outside a residence. Upon inquiring if one of them was the driver of the white truck, the officer said Bernard Adams answered him affirmatively.

Adams was immediately arrested on an outstanding warrant. During a search of the suspect, Gourley and Lt. Marvin Milner said they found three clear bags containing suspected cocaine.

After being transported to the police station, Adams reportedly refused to cooperate with authorities. He since has been charged with possession of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school (Gillespie-Selden Learning Center), purchase, possession or control of any controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and apprehension of a wanted person.

In other activity, police:

— Made an arrest in one of three reported burglaries only one of which actually resulted in a property loss.

Sgt. Charles Dennard said Craig Jerome Walker, 51, of 401 11th Ave. E., was caught after a citizen reported seeing a subject wearing black clothing and a red hat breaking into an abandoned house at 316 15th Ave. E.

Dennard arrived in time to seeing the alleged offender fleeing on a bicycle he rode while cutting through several yards in the neighborhood.

He was found hiding outside a vacant house in the 300 block of 14th Avenue East but again off running before being caught by Sgt. Dean Brown.

Walker has been charged with apprehension of a wanted person (he was previously wanted for a state probation violation) and obstruction of a law enforcement officer in the performance of his duty.

A resident of the 1200 block of Drayton Rd. told Pvt. Erica Cromer someone entered her home through an unsecured door and took several items including clothing, shoes and meat from a freezer.

Cpl. Dedra Davis said a maintenance man working on a home in the 1000 block of 14th Street South told her the back door frame there had been damaged in order to gain access to the dwelling. Nothing apparently was taken by tools in the structure had been moved around.

In addition to the Monday burglaries they investigated, police also charged Tonay McCall, 18, of 511 Ninth Ave. E. with burglary in connection with a previous forced residential break-in.

— Took possession of a hatchet left on the front porch of a Ninth Street North home and drugs found in a vehicle officers had towed to a local car dealership.

Sgt. Dean Brown said a resident told him that at about 10 p.m. Sunday she heard two unknown Hispanic males walk onto her porch, engage in a conversation and then walk away,

The woman made no contact with authorities until Monday when she found a hatchet had been left there. Police took the item for safekeeping in case if it is claimed.

Lt. Frank Wise said he was called to the car dealer’s location when an employee found a cigarette pack containing a white substance later determined to be cocaine.

— Assumed custody of Terrance Haugabrook, 21, of 622 Third Ave. E., after Crisp County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested him on U.S. 280 after learning he was wanted on a contempt of court charge for failing to appear in court for an open container of alcohol charge.

— Received a trespassing complaint from a resident of the 400 block of 23 Ave. E.

The home occupant said a subject he named attempted to enter a back bedroom window before calling out to him to open the door or he would “burn the house down.”

Police searched the area but were unable to locate the offender.
