Wilcox County — Larry Brown, (left), Abbeville fire chief, was named Georgia State Firefighters Association district representative for 2011 at the annual joint firefighter and firechiefs conference in Columbus, Sept. 21-25. Presenting his award is Scott Carter, president of the Georgia Firefighters Association. Brown represents Area 8 which consists of 22 counties in southeast Georgia. He also is Wilcox Emergency Management director, Wilcox County fire chief, deputy coroner, and a fire marshal for the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Long-time resident and community leader Jean Burnette passed away Sunday. Burnette served the City of Cordele first as assistant city administrator from 1974 until 2000 when she became city administrator. She retained that position until her retirement in 2010.
