Wild threats result in local man’s arrest

CORDELE — A Cordele man was arrested early Wednesday morning on a number of charges after launching a three-hour tirade against virtually every Cordele Police Department officer on duty.

Jimmy Lee Haynes, age 33, of a Joe Wright Drive address, was arrested on five felony counts of making terroristic threats and one misdemeanor charge of public intoxication.

According to an incident report filed by Officer Erica Cromer, Haynes was recorded on the CPD’s audio system making a variety of wild threats, including killing two officers in two different ways and blowing up City Hall.

Haynes’ bad night began shortly after midnight at a residence on West Fifth Avenue where officers initially responded to a complaint about a trespasser.

Cromer and another CPD officer approached the residence on foot and noticed Haynes get out of a vehicle and walk toward the house. Cromer’s report said the officers “advised the suspect several times to stop. The suspect kept walking away...”

Cromer handcuffed Haynes after she and the other officer were able to get Haynes to comply with their requests.

That’s when the tirade began.

According to Cromer’s report, “(Haynes) began to curse and yell at me, Sgt. Montgomery, and Officer Sales. (Haynes) was so loud he woke up the neighbors...I could smell a very strong odor of alcohol coming from Mr. Haynes’ breath and person. Mr. Haynes appeared intoxicated and there was a beer can lying next to his vehicle.”

But that was just the beginning.

“While at the Police Department, (Haynes) advised Sgt. Montgomery that he was going to snap his neck. He also advised Montgomery that he was going to break his jaw in three places. He further commented that if he saw Sgt. Montgomery on the streets that he would kill him,” Cromer wrote in her report.

“(Haynes) also stated that if he had a 9mm that he would shoot and kill Sgt. C. Lull. He then stated that he would beat Officer Sales if he could get to him and fight him one on one. (Haynes) repeatedly stated to Lt. New that he wanted five minutes alone with Sgt. Montgomery in the cell with him,” Cromer’s report continued.

Haynes then reportedly got really nasty.

“After urinating on the floor of the holding cell, (Haynes) had his fist balled up and advised Lt. New that he wanted Sgt. Montgomery and if Sgt. Montgomery walked by, he didn’t mind catching a charge for jumping on him,” Cromer’s report said.

“Mr. Haynes was then placed in another holding cell due to his irate and irrational behavior in the caged cell. Once inside the other cell Mr. Haynes coughed up saliva and spit onto the camera inside the cell.”

Haynes apparently had difficulty settling down in his new confines, though.

“(Haynes) then stated in front of me and Sgt. Montgomery that when he was released he was going home to get several oxygen tanks and come back and blow up the entire Police Department to kill all of us that were working at the time,” Cromer said in her report.

If Haynes is convicted on all five of the terroristic threats charges, he faces a maximum total of 25 years imprisonment and up to $5,000 in fines. He is currently being held at the Crisp County Law Enforcement Center awaiting a bond hearing.
